Paleografy Seminars: Manuscript Culture in Boccaccio's Times
Seminars are taught by internationally renowned scholars: Irene Ceccherini, Marco Cursi, Teresa De Robertis, Claudia Montuschi, Maddalena Signorini, David Speranzi, Stefano Zamponi.
Qualified applicants should send their CV and a statement which explains their interest in participating in the seminar (maximum 250 words) by March 15, 2024 to Paola Ureni (paola.ureni@csi.cuny.edu). The Seminar is open to scholars and graduate tudents alike.
The program fee for the seminar is $800 (USD) to be paid to the American Boccaccio association upon notification of acceptance. Participants will receive notice of their acceptance by the end of March 2024.Program:
The Paleography Seminars will involve methodological and practical components of Latin and vernacular paleography taught by experts in the field from a variety of Italian universities. The teaching program will include propedeutic online sessions in May and eight days in Italy (Florence, Certaldo, Rome) introductions to the major Florentine and Roman libraries; paleography classes using Latin and vernacular manuscripts, and transcription practice. Participants should be ABA members, and have good knowledge of the Italian language as the seminars will be conducted in Italian.June 5-8 Florence

June 10-12 RomeThe American Boccaccio Association will provide two travel grants of $250 each to raduate students. In addition to a CV and brief statement of interest, graduate students should also provide a brief description of their research project in the field of Boccaccio studies (including title, abstract, description of the project, contribution to the field, and selected bibliography).

Edizione critica del "De montibus" di Giovanni Boccaccio
Giovanni Boccaccio attese negli anni della sua maturità alla stesura di opere erudite in latino: fondamentali sono la Genealogia deorum gentilium e il De montibus, che appartengono a uno stesso progetto culturale. Il De montibus è un repertorio geografico a servizio della corretta lettura degli antichi e si configura come una successione di voci, in genere sintetiche, distribuite grosso modo in ordine alfabetico, in cui Boccaccio presenta monti, fiumi, laghi, mari, appoggiandosi alle proprie conoscenze acquisite grazie alla lettura degli antichi e delle opere medievali. In un articolato prologo, percorso da spirito critico e pulsioni filologiche, Boccaccio spiega il proprio metodo e si lamenta delle difficoltà incontrate nella lettura dei testi a causa degli errori e dei fraintendimenti dei copisti, soprattutto per quanto attiene la corretta ortografia dei nomi propri. In conclusione riconosce il magistero di Petrarca, che si era dimostrato maestro anche in questioni geografiche (a Petrarca del resto si deve la riscoperta dei Geografi latini minori, Pomponio Mela e Vibio Sequestre, copiosamente adoperati dallo stesso Boccaccio). Manca un’edizione critica moderna del De montibus, condotta secondo un rigoroso criterio filologico, nonché una traduzione in lingua italiana e un commento che tenga conto delle recenti acquisizioni sulla biblioteca di Boccaccio.
Obiettivo del progetto di ricerca (avviato ad aprile 2023 e concluso ad aprile 2024) è stato realizzare uno studio per un’edizione del De montibus, con traduzione e adeguato commento.Responsabile scientifico: Marco Petoletti (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano-Consigliere ENGB)
